The Lakes Region is a distant second, followed by Manchester and the Merrimack Valley cities.

Spring mud season (April into May) and midweek nights year-round are the value windows — mountain motels can dip toward $72–$120. Avoid the three priciest stretches: White Mountain foliage weekends in late September and October, ski holidays and powder weekends in winter, and Laconia Motorcycle Week in mid-June around the Lakes Region.

Both, and it varies by property — which is why we note it honestly on each listing. The restored White Mountain and Lakes Region inns are the heart of the in-room jacuzzi: places like Jackson's Snowflake Inn and Inn at Ellis River, Ashland's Glynn House, Bethlehem's Adair, and West Chesterfield's Chesterfield Inn pair a fireplace with a two-person whirlpool tub, and a few hotels have a confirmed in-room jacuzzi room — Hampton Village Inn's King Jacuzzi Suite, the Nootka Lodge's Jacuzzi units, and Intervale's Cathedral Ledge condos. The in-room tub is usually an upper-tier room category (whirlpool suite, fireplace suite), so select the room marked 'jacuzzi' or 'whirlpool' and confirm it directly. Other resorts and chains instead offer a shared hot tub or a pool whirlpool — the Omni Mount Washington, the Mountain View Grand, and the Buttonwood Inn among them — which we flag on each listing.

Roughly $72 at the low end (midweek and off-season motels along the Lincoln and North Conway strips) to about $328 for grand-resort suites at the Omni Mount Washington in Bretton Woods. Most mid-tier whirlpool suites in the White Mountains and Lakes Region fall in the $150–$280 range, with foliage and ski weekends pushing toward the top.

It's arguably the best season for it. The White Mountains turn into a ski-and-soak destination — Loon, Cannon, Bretton Woods, Attitash, and Wildcat all sit near verified jacuzzi hotels — and the in-room tub feels especially earned after a cold day on the slopes or the cross-country trails in Jackson. Midweek winter stays are also some of the best value of the year.

Pick the White Mountains (Lincoln, North Conway, Jackson, Bretton Woods) for hiking, skiing, notches, and dramatic scenery — it's the bigger, busier mountain experience. Pick the Lakes Region (Meredith, Laconia, Holderness) for swimming, boating, and waterfront summer towns at a gentler pace. Plymouth and Ashland sit between the two and make a good split-the-difference base.

Almost always, yes. Outside Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth, public transit is minimal, and the White Mountains, Lakes Region, and Kancamagus Highway all assume you're driving. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is the most convenient gateway; Boston Logan is about two hours from the mountains. In winter, plan for snow and pack all-season or winter tires for the notches.

Jackson and Sugar Hill in the White Mountains are the classic picks — restored country inns, fireplaces, covered bridges, and quiet snow-globe winters. For a grand-hotel anniversary, the Omni Mount Washington in Bretton Woods sits under the Presidential Range; for a modern resort suite, RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain in Lincoln is the easiest weekend base.

Lincoln is the family capital — Clark's Bears, the Hobo Railroad, Whale's Tale Waterpark, and the Loon Mountain gondola are all on one strip, with resort suites big enough for a family. North Conway adds the Conway Scenic Railroad, Story Land in nearby Glen, and tax-free outlet shopping. In summer, Laconia and Weirs Beach bring lake swimming and arcades.

Lincoln for Loon Mountain (and Cannon a few exits north), Bartlett for Attitash and Wildcat, Jackson for downhill plus the largest cross-country network in the East, and Bretton Woods for the biggest ski area in the state right outside the Omni. All four have hotels with in-room whirlpool tubs — or, at the resorts, a shared hot tub — to thaw out in after the lifts close.

North Conway sits at the eastern end of the Kancamagus Highway, the most famous foliage drive in New England. Jackson, Sugar Hill, and Bethlehem put you on the high-country color that peaks late September into early October. Book 1–2 months ahead — White Mountain foliage weekends are the busiest and priciest of the year.
